After delivering our speech today, I feel as if Mackie and I collaborated well. We had a good way of communicating via text and email to bounce ideas off each other. We discovered that we are both terrified of being late and how others will perceive us. After the dry run, we made several alterations to our speech. We added a better visual aid and showed the class how to make their own Google Sheets; we also added different ways that the class could organize without using Google Sheets. The only real struggle that we had was finding time that we could both collectively contribute to the project. We are both super busy, but we managed to work together on the project. We discovered that by improving our visuals, we were able to sound more confident. When we sound more confident, we also slow down a bit, which was something that we needed to work on. After the dry run, we both knew what we could improve on and what we needed to do. I think the whole process of meeting with our partner and having that “dry run” was extremely beneficial. Overall, I think that our end product was the best it could have been. Mackie and I worked well together!

  2. When it was first announced that we would be working with partners to deliver our second speeches I immediately hated the idea, I did not think I could give a better speech if there was more voices to speak. I was very wrong since by the end of this experience I can say that working with someone else to complete this speech made the whole ordeal much easier. In the two person groups we were assigned, my partner and I were able to work pretty well together, the dynamic flowed much better than my first speech and having someone else to work with and be reassured by definitely was a boost to my confidence and comfortability. The only struggle that I could consider was communication since we were both busy and life happens but that was not even much of a struggle. Otherwise, the brainstorming process and our equal engagement in the topic was very good. As a whole, the speech felt like a major success to me, especially after my prior speech 1 in which I was much more nervous and alone. I thought it would be hard to put my trust and grade into someone else’s hands as well but it did not turn out like that at all. I am excited to work in groups again in the future.

  3. After Maddie and I gave our speech on teaching the skill of lobstering, I felt fairly good about the quality of the presentation. It was difficult at first to find a skill that the both of us shared, but once we found out that we both had lobstering in our backgrounds, it was easy to progress from there. I knew I had easy access to my traps, so the potential for a unique demonstration using props was exciting. Throughout the process of developing a speech, Maddie and I found it difficult to determine the depth of detail and information that we should present. The initial draft of the script was too in-depth so we cut some aspects out, but that ended up causing us to fall just short of the four minutes required. After rewatching the recorded dry run and some advice, we came to the final speech more prepared and confident in our script. I did not feel great about my performance during to the dry run speech, I feel like I spoke to fast and was nervous, but practicing more helped me be more comfortable during the second run. Overall, I feel good about the effort put in by Maddie and I, and I think we were effective in presenting our skill to the class in a interesting and comprehensive way.

  4. After presenting I think that me and my partner did well. We had good chemistry, played off each other’s words, and worked on each other’s strength. We did have a hard time meeting in the beginning, only communicating through our shared google doc. Our dry run was rough but I think it’s because we didn’t talk about who was doing what part and we did not finalize the layout. Once we met we discussed the pro and con comments given during our dry run. We reworked the layout to help transition into each part. I found it hard to do the outline doing it how he wanted it but after talking with my partner I think we created a good outline with our prop/ presentation. After our meeting it went better because we discussed how we should layout each part. Starting from the smallest topic snacks leading into the bigger topics like the forum and dining hall. Getting comments that our transitions, chemistry, and presentation worked well together made me feel that our speech was good and really captivated the audience. Overall I think we connected to the audience verbally and through our presentation.

  5. After delivering our speech about baking, I feel as though we did as good of a job as we could. Lilith and I were quick to agree upon a skill and start the process of what we needed to do. The struggle was not being able to meet in person so over the phone communication was the next best thing. We reached out daily and talked about how we will be going about the presentation. I think what we did worked for us in the end. Having a partner to share the spotlight with and bounce ideas off of definitely helped with the nerves in this speech. I as well think that the adjustments we made from the dry run to the final presentation benefitted the overall fluidity of our speech. Everything was more organized and orderly. Overall, I think Lilith and I did a good job at delivering our speech and working together.

  6. Sydney and I presented in class on Tuesday and I think that it went really well. We took the feedback we were given from our dry run and incorporated into the already created script that we had from before. Adding these new ideas and a newly made visual aid I think we did a really good job at conveying why we thought our shared skill was important and how we could help others develop this shares skill. I think Sydney and I as a team was awesome, we worked well with each other. We texted quite frequently leading up to the presentation on Tuesday about what to add and to make sure we feel one hundred percent confident in our speech. I think that the struggles that we face initially, just finding a common topic and making it interesting, really went away after the first class and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

  7. My overall reflection of the project was that it went pretty well. I was happy with our final product and I don’t know if fun is the right word but it wasn’t the worst speech in the world. At first when we were partnered up I was a little nervous about what our shared skill would be, and our second choices were skiing (someone already did it) and something related to biology (really boring). I’m glad we were able to find a unique similarity and I think our process of getting it done went very smoothly and overall Andrew and I worked well together. Lobster trapping was interesting to talk about and it was very helpful that Andrew commuted and was able to bring in all the props. I think being up there with another person makes the whole process a little easier so I am thankful that this was a group thing. If i could go back and change one thing I think I would rehearse what I said a little more because I did bring my outline up with me and now I am second guessing if I looked at it too much. Nonetheless I think we put in a good work and that our presentation was pretty solid.

  8. After delivering our speech on Tuesday, I feel like Sophia, and I worked very well together. Even with our busy schedules we were still able to communicate through email and meet up to do a practice run of our speech. When we were assigned partners, Sophia and I discussed a few skills that we each had until we found one that we shared, and both really enjoy. We came up with our main points to talk about on that skill and managed to do a rough dry run of our speech to our peers. From there we worked together to make an outline with our main points and a few sub-points for each one. We also created a slideshow with pictures and video clips to help the audience understand. We didn’t really have any struggles except communication at times due to our busy schedules, but we found our ways to work around it. One thing we did well together was incorporating the feedback we received between our first rough dry run and our video dry run into our final speech. With everything we did in preparation for our final speech delivery, it paid off, I feel like we successfully delivered a great speech.

  9. After presenting on Friday I think I could’ve done better. I felt extremely confident in my work and how I prepared for this along with the topic I decided to work on. I think me and my partner had trouble at times because of not being in class and I think that that has hurt us. From the dry run to now I feel as though we did better the second time around like we should’ve but didn’t get to fully engage in how well we could’ve done. Working with someone else on a speech is extremely hard for me not knowing how it will go or how things will be presented. But overall me and my partner worked well and I feel like we presented a good speech about an important topic.

  10. This project was not that difficult now that I am looking back on it. Normally, I experience a considerable amount of stress leading up to speeches or presentations, but that was almost entirely absent in this circumstance. As for reasons why this is, I can only assume it is because I had a partner up there with me and her help in preparing for the speech altogether. The successes of this project, which were very common throughout the entire process, were due in large part to the teamwork that Aiden and I both exhibited during the time we were working. Though our independent work did not overlap, we were able to build off each other’s individual progress to make the whole process more fluent.
I knew this before starting this speech, but working with someone who is capable and committed to the success of their work makes life so much easier and less stressful. After today’s presentation, I was feeling very good about how things went. My expectations were lower than they normally are for myself, so that diminished my stress levels down to almost zero, while keeping my confidence up high. All in all, I am happy with how things went.

  11. After presenting our speech today, I was very proud and kind of stress relieved that it was over. My engagement was definitely 100% there the whole way through. During the writing of our outline process, we bounced ideas off each other that ended up being a crowd pleaser and a positive impact of what are message was. The successful moments were truly when we both agreed on something that would only make our skill that we were proposing stronger. Wether it was adding props like the actual basketball to describe ball placement better or how many dribbles we do in our own routine really helped the audience understand. We also put tape on the actual ground and made it an actual scenario if you were at the line. Mia acted as the reff and I feel like we were just having a conversation the whole time. It felt more comfortable and easy to talk to rather than it being awkward and choppy.

  12. I think overall that Abbi and I did very well as a team. Our process of how we came about our topic speech and then our final project went smoothly. We both figured out that we wanted to talk about something with athletics. We figured out early on that we were both athletes and both had backgrounds in hockey, and hockey was too big of a topic so we landed on taping a hockey stick. I feel like we communicated pretty well by texting and meeting in person as well as talking during before and after class, we were on the same page for most of the time. I really enjoyed talking about hockey because I played it all my life and I can talk about it forever if I really wanted to. Because it was something we both had experience doing I was not really nervous about presenting in front of the class because I enjoy what I was doing. For struggles, we did not face any massive struggles along the way, just small things like how to organize the speech and how we wanted to present, but we recovered and figured it out pretty quickly.

  13. Now that the speech 2 is done and over with I am happy with how it turned out. It was hard in the beginning trying to figure out what skill me and my partner had. When going through with the project it was fun and less stressful than doing a speech/ project on your own. I always struggle with presenting in front of a class, but doing it with someone else I could always rely on when I mess up made it a little easier to do. I did discover that when we do dry runs before the big speech makes a big difference for the final because you can get feedback and be able to fix what the audience doesn’t think would work for you. Watching everyone else’s speech was very entertaining and fun to listen to. Overall speech 2 was very fun and I’m glad it was a speech in the class.

  14. After Kasey and I delivered our speech on Friday, I felt that we did extremely well. We were able to really bounce off each other, and it was definitely less choppy than our first dry run. Our process of writing the speech worked well. We both made a very detailed outline that assisted us when speaking. When we were able to do our dry run, we both enjoyed receiving the feedback given to us. We were able to use the constructive criticism to our advantage and really tidy up our mistakes before the actual final speech. There were some doubts about being able to make our speech fit the time limit, but we ended up making the time limit flawlessly. Not knowing Kasey just a couple weeks ago and being able to be so comfortable giving a speech with her was such a success. We really bonded and did a great job.

  15. Overall, I think the project went well. I think that it was a good way prompt to do for a collaborative speech. I think the dry runs help because you were able to receive feedback. It also allowed you to make changes to improve the speech before the final day. I did agree with a comment someone made that the dry run made the final speech feel awkward because you feel as though, you’re just repeating yourself but, we are in a class to improve our public speaking skills, so I think the dry run was actually very helpful from a learning perspective. It was interesting working on a speech with another person, there was much more communication needed compared to something like a group presentation for a class. I think our final speech was alright, it could have been better if we prepared more. I think the use of visuals from the PowerPoint and prompt really helped us fill the gaps that we struggled with in our dry run. I also tried to have a better outline and script for the final which was helpful because I was able to complete thoughts and not ramble like I did when I only had an outline for the dry run. Overall, I thought the project went well and the ability to build off of our dry runs was really helpful.

  16. After delivering speech 2, I am very content with our delivery. I thought it went very well and a lot smoother than our dry run. Rachael and I worked well together and communicated efficiently. We both really enjoyed our topic and I thought it was a fun experience. Being able to interact with the class and present something very hands on was very effective to keep the audience attentive. During our dry run, it was our first time making the slime, so it was a little rough. However, I thought that this helped us to prepare very well for the real speech. The second time around, we made sure to pre measure our ingredients, and be more specific in our instructions. We got the recipe down, and got the class involved. We were more confident and prepared for the second time. One of our struggles during the dry run was the gaps in between our directions. We definitely improved on this by interacting with the class, and walking around to check in on how the slime was coming out. Overall, I think it went very well and I am happy with our success.

  17. Over the course of completing and finally presenting speech 2, it was a good process. I know that we had some struggles at first when we did the dry run such as silent moments while making the slime but also creating the slime itself was hard. After practicing and getting the correct measurements, creating the slime was quite simple. Our silent moments were no longer there because the class was making slime with us, and we were talking them through it. The engagement of the class was amazing and we got really good feedback from everyone. They had fun making slime, but also got the experience and directions if they would like to make it in the future. We overcame all of our beginning struggles and in the end, it turned out great. I am really pleased with how it turned out and how the class enjoyed it as well.

  18. I was fairly hesitant at first to the idea of giving a speech with a partner; Khloe and I required a long conversation to finally find a topic that we were both knowledgeable on, held credibility on, and enjoyed talking about. With both of our schedules, we were only able to find one time outside of class to sit down and iron out the details. If we were able to meet two or three times, I think we could’ve brainstormed some even better ways to get our message across or possibly a more effective visual. The dry run was a good reality check that we needed to rework our outline, not necessarily making it more detailed, but adding a clear introduction, main points, supporting points, transitions, and a conclusion. We were also able to see general public speaking flaws; such as filler words, fidgeting, and speaking directly off of the script. Our final delivery of the speech was successful in my opinion. I believe we reduced the amount of nervous speech tendencies and our new and improved outline flowed with our intended purpose and chemistry with one another. Although our topic probably wasn’t what I would’ve chosen for a speech by myself, dividing the work amongst us made the process much smoother.

  19. I fear saying something that might convince the professor to give me a lower score, but I don’t think I was fully “present” while preparing for this speech. The whole process was highly stress inducing for me and I found myself merely rushing to get the project done and “over with”. I wasn’t necessarily putting my all into every step of the process and giving my work the nuance and attention it needs. But I also think I did well communicating and developing some cohesive ideas with my partner. I was really worried about how well I would be able to work with my partner, but now regret letting my worries get to me and prevent me from achieving the quality of work I am used to. I think being able to evaluate my developmental style compared to another’s first hand really helped me identify potential points lacking integrity that I could work on to improve my speaking and collaborative processes. But overall I think it went fairly smooth and I think I seeing an improvement in my speaking confidence. More often than not I still end up regretting whenever I speak at all, but I am developing more confidence to do it anyway, which I think is good.

  20. I’d say that this project was fairly easy as it was a collaborative speech. The work felt fairly even and we worked really well together. I felt pretty engaged with this topic as we had to choose something to teach to the class. It felt like a more informal way of learning. Our process was fairly simple. I think creating our outline on the first workshop day definitely worked in our favor. It allowed us to have an easier road toward our final draft and speech delivery day. I discovered that delivery is a lot less stressful when you have another person to bounce your ideas and content off of.

  21. The project is finished! Kasey and I had a lot of difficulties and struggles along the way but it felt good to present and finish the project. We dealt with sicknesses and concussions and snow days, but even when we were thrown these curveballs we adjusted with help from the professor to figure out how to still finish the project. Kasey and I had trouble meeting with each other as our schedules and health overlapped with each other. When we did meet in person it was very effective and we made a strong plan on who was saying what, how we will incorporate the slideshow, and how we will incorporate the props. We figured everything out and after practicing it a couple of times we felt comfortable performing it in front of our classmates. It wasn’t an easy process, but we finished and it feels really good to have completed it knowing the challenges we faced. Overall, I’m very happy with the outcome and I think it came together to be a solid speech!

  22. JOURNAL # 9: I believe our project was really successful. We were both engaged and wanted to get the point across that we wanted. Our struggle was our timing never lining up due to health issues and snow days, but we figured it out and we were able to finally present. I am happy with how we presented and our delivery I believe was a lot better than what I anticipated.
